I’m Going to be Like You Dad

I’m going to be like you Dad.

Every charming smile,

Every break up.

Every makeup,

Every mile.

I’m going to be like you Dad.

All the thousand insignificant hurts

Are the ones only you will understand;

And on those night when life seems much too sad,

I know you will be beside me, Dad.

And, I’m going to be like you Dad.

That restless style which seems ill at ease,

In this false and shallow world,

Will bring me back down upon my knees

To worship…not to wallow.

I’m going to be like you Dad.

In all the sacrifice, and all the loss

You gave me all…you rolled the dice,

And never ever let me fall

Without a tender kindness behind it all.

I’m going to be like you Dad.

And, it’s an interesting thing indeed,

To have the things that were for you so fleeting,

That night your own Dad’s heart stopped beating.

It’s not the quantity, but the quality,

The wisest men have said:

And as it was for you, so may it be for me.

I’m going to be like you Dad.

Every day…in every way.

And the truest truth for all to see…

Is I love you….and you love me.
